Rooted Hair Extensions Cares About Your Hair & Scalp Health

Scalp Health is a Strong Foundation for Extensions

Hair extensions can be a game-changer by adding instant volume, length, and fullness to your hair. Quality hair extensions, like Rooted Hair Extensions, and a professional extension provider can offer a seamless blend and a natural, lived-in look. While extensions can transform your style, maintaining a healthy scalp is just as important.

Scalp health is often overlooked. A healthy scalp is the foundation of the health and strength of your hair. Here are some essential tips for keeping your scalp healthy while wearing extensions, and why regular move-ups and proper re-installation play a crucial role in you and your clients success with extensions.

Scalp Health While Wearing Extensions

Learning more about how to maintain a healthy scalp will be rewarding long term. Our scalp is the nutrient center that produces strong hair strands and the more we can help our scalp circulate blood flow and nutrients, the stronger our strands will be. Wearing extensions requires a little extra care to ensure your scalp stays in top condition.
Here’s how:

Cleanse Regularly (But Gently)
It’s a myth that you shouldn’t wash your hair with extensions. In fact, regular washing helps prevent buildup, which can lead to irritation, itching, or even hair loss. Using a sulfate-free shampoo and focus on cleansing the scalp with gentle pressure - we don't need a harsh scrubbing action to cleanse your hair and extensions. Even when there is some build up present, pre-combing your hair and extensions will loosen or remove it before cleansing. An unpopular opinion is that your water should not be super HOT. Hot showers can be relaxing, but over time, high temperatures can disrupt your scalp's natural "microbiome" and can lead to irritation and potentially weaken the hair follicles. Always rinse with cooler water.

Keep Your Scalp Hydrated
While oils and heavy conditioners should be kept away from extension bonds, nano beads or tapes, a healthy scalp still needs hydration. Use a lightweight, scalp-friendly, non silicone serum or a hydrating mist to nourish the scalp without causing your extensions to slip.

Avoid Excessive Tension
If you’re experiencing discomfort, headaches, or excessive pulling and tightness, your extensions may be installed too tightly. Don't be afraid to communicate with your stylist to ensure your extensions are applied comfortably. Tight extensions can cause stress on the hair follicles, leading to breakage or even traction alopecia over time.

Brush With Care
Using the right tools can make all the difference. The right tools really help to properly detangle the hair without excessive pulling. Tools such as a loop brush or a soft bristle brush that are designed for extensions will help to keep your extensions in the best shape for as long as possible. Start at the ends and work your way up the strands, and always hold the roots to prevent tugging. Make the commitment to keep a regular brushing routine as a part of your regular daily self care and hygiene. Brushing your extensions at least twice a day prevents tangling and keeps your extensions looking fresh. Here are a few links to our favourite hair extension brushes on the market:

Protect Your Hair While Sleeping
Tossing and turning at night can cause matting and tangling, so it’s best to be prepared by securing your hair before bed. A loose braid or a low ponytail can prevent unnecessary pulling. Sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase also reduces friction, helping both your natural hair and extensions stay smooth and tangle-free.

The Importance of Proper Move-Ups & Re-Installs

Regular maintenance appointments are non-negotiable when it comes to wearing extensions safely. Preventing matting and tangling as your natural hair grows is essential in order to avoid experiencing a lasting negative impact. With any installation method, (wefts, bonds, nano beads or tapes) the extensions move further down as your hair grows, which can make them more susceptible to tangling at the root area, which can lead to knots that can be difficult (and painful) to remove. Protecting natural hair from breakage is the main goal of establishing and maintaining a proper care routine.

Regular maintenance move-ups and re-installs keep your hair looking as fresh and natural as possible. The properly scheduled appointments help to maintain a seamless look, while extensions that are overdue for maintenance can start to look uneven, unblended, bulky, and may even start to feel heavy.

We suggest this schedule to help you and your clients to ensure a healthy grow-out for long term extension wearers.

Move-ups every 4-6 weeks
Reinstall after the move-up appointment every 6-8 weeks after. This ensures your moving the extensions around and not placing the same hair over top of the shedding areas over and over again.

Following all these steps will keep your scalp, hair, and extensions looking and feeling amazing! The hair extension lifestyle is an investment into your clients image and appearance, and also their confidence. Taking the time to create the best care routine is not only beneficial to keeping the extensions in the best shape for as long as possible, but also ensure natural hair and scalp health. Buildup from products, oils, and natural shedding can occur underneath extensions. During your move-up or reinstall appointments, your stylist should properly cleanse and reset your extensions, ensuring your scalp remains healthy.
