New Season, New Hair Extension Consultations

New Season, New Hair Extensions

Pumpkin spice lattes, plaid shackets, and snuggling by the fireplace season is here!

Walking along your favorite trail with your pumpkin spice latte taking in all the beauty of the fall landscape and the changing colours of the leaves is definitely worth prioritizing. Nothing quite like the beauty of the autumn season to give us new inspiration, and change things up for our clients’ hair.

As hairstylists, we get to play around with the things that inspire us. Nature and its seasons are beautiful muses for obvious reasons.

A Chance to Change Your Look With Extensions

Our guests look to us to lead them into their ‘new look’ era. Trusting our vision and expertise. They come to us looking for something, and we must skillfully lead them to their new look, while enhancing their features, complexion, and confidence.

When fall arrives, our typical move, as hairstylists, is to suggest warmer, richer, darker hues for our guests’ manes. One thing that we neglect to mention is that, for some people, this would be a great time of year to try luxury hair extensions for the first time. The cooler season would be more ideal for women who tend to have a consistently warmer body temperature, so that they aren’t worried about the “extra hair” from their extensions making them feel too warm. I know there are some ladies out there who know exactly what I’m talking about!

New Season, New Hair Extension Conversations

Sometimes we need a new angle to our approach when we bring up the “I think it’s time for you to try our hair extensions” conversation, and the fall season is a great time to recalibrate your approach and motivation to share what amazing options exist for just about anyone.

It’s important that we remind our guests about the many benefits of hair extensions. With your expert installation you can achieve your desired length, increase your hair density, improve manageability and style-ability (if that’s a word, lol). Luxury hair extensions can feel like a dream come true, when installed by an expert. Remind your guests of all the possibilities and benefits of adding extensions. Especially if clients’ have had some chemical damage, and would rather not use too many chemicals on their hair, they can add subtle highlights or adjust the tones in their hair with hair extensions. Like I said, a dream come true!

Things to consider when suggesting hair extensions for a first time user:

  1. Budget. consider not only the initial appointment, but the ongoing responsibilities and costs associated with maintenance appointments and products.
  2. Goals. Make sure that your super clear, expert consultation skills give you all of the important information about what the client is hoping to achieve and what is possible with the available options and budget.
  3. Plan out the appointment by colour matching, and based on the desired outcome, place your order accordingly, and set the next appointment for installation.
  4. Support your guest on this new journey of hair extensions. Let them know what to expect, what is normal and what is not so normal. Be available for them when they have questions. Perhaps even prepare a “what to expect” downloadable guide.

Be Prepared for Each Client in Your Chair

It's not overzealous to want to be well-prepared for the conversations that you want to have with certain clients about their hair needs and trying hair extensions for the first time. You know their hair probably better than they know their own hair. You also know exactly what their 'pain points' are when it comes to how they feel about their hair. Providing specific information related to their specific needs, isn't manipulation, it's exactly what your guests are looking for but they often don't know how to ask. They don't always know what the possibilities are, so will come to their own conclusions when it comes to hair extensions. We have to be confident enough to have detailed conversations and help them see the vision of the "new version" of themselves. Describe how they will feel when they're not constantly worried about their damaged hair, or low volume and density. Remind them of how much more confidence they will carry themselves with day to day.

I hope these tips were helpful for our newer extensionistas, and for our more experienced installers, I hope it’s just a good reminder of what is to be considered to give your clients the best experience possible.
